Pre Natal Physio and Post Natal Physio in Leeds & the Surrounding Areas
Here at Physio action, we pride ourselves on delivering a complete range of pre- and post-natal physiotherapy for women. Our dedicated women’s heath physiotherapist is based at our Ilkley practice, but also holds clinics in Leeds as and when required.
The services we offer include assessment and treatment for a range of problems often experienced by pregnant women, or those that have given birth. These include but are not limited to; Incontinence, bladder problems, stress, pelvic floor assessments and prolapses. We can also provide pre- and post-natal checks along with Diastasis checks following births as 6-8 week check.
It is not unusual for women to suffer from lower back and pelvic pain during pregnancy. This is as a result of the ligaments being looser which leads to more strain being placed on the joints. Which in turn often leads to both pain and dysfunction.
Even if you have a relatively straightforward pregnancy and birth, your body will undergo changes that can be both uncomfortable and concerning. Here at Physio Action our pre-natal physio services allow us to assess, diagnose and successfully treat any pain you may be experiencing during your pregnancy.
We are also able to offer advice and prescribe safe exercises to ensure you stay fit and healthy during pregnancy. By providing you with information on posture, we can help reduce the strain and discomfort on your lower back and pelvic joints.
The fact that every pregnancy is different means that our physiotherapist will design a plan that is tailored to your exact needs. Some of the exercises and treatments we offer during pre-natal physio include, strengthening of pelvic floor and core muscles, joint mobilisation and massage, all aimed at helping you maintain flexibility and strength.

Post Natal Physio
After childbirth there will often be a certain level of weakening to your pelvic floor muscles. Pelvic floor muscles are important for things such as continence, pelvic stability and sexual functions. It is vital that, after having a baby, you have access to the necessary physiotherapy so as to improve your overall health and pelvic floor strength.
Pelvic floor muscles will almost certainly be adversely affected during pregnancy and childbirth. It is imperative therefore that you begin pelvic floor exercises as soon as possible. After your baby is born there is a chance the amount of lifting you are doing will substantially increase which can lead to a number of aches and pains.
The aim of post-natal physio is to help you avoid or correct any issues as quickly as possible. Some of the problems that occur postnatally include incontinence, pelvic and lower back pain, upper back and neck pain. Treatments can include abdominal and core strengthening, tailored pelvic floor programme, scar tissue management and advice on nutrition, sleep and posture.
