Physiotherapy Leeds FAQs

What happens during a physiotherapy session?

In a typical session, one of our team will assess your condition, will design a bespoke treatment plan, which will include various techniques such as exercises, stretches, manual therapy, heat or cold therapy to help reduce pain or inflammation and improve or regain joint movement.

Is physiotherapy in Leeds painful?

No, definitely not but some of the techniques we use or exercises we recommend may cause mild short-term discomfort, especially during the initial stages of treatment. But rest assured in our very capable hands you will start to get better quickly.

How long does a physiotherapy session last?

This can vary depending on each patient’s needs and the specific treatment plan. Sessions typically last between 30 minutes to an hour.

How many physiotherapy sessions will I need?

The number of sessions required varies widely depending on the condition, its severity, and the individual’s response to treatment. One of our expert team will discuss and adjust the treatment plan as needed.

Can physiotherapy prevent injuries?

Physiotherapy can play a preventive role by identifying and addressing factors that may lead to injuries. Our experienced physiotherapists in Leeds often provide education on proper body mechanics, such as posture as well as exercises to reduce the risk of injuries.

Can I do physiotherapy exercises at home?

Our physios in Leeds often prescribe home exercises as part of a treatment plan to complement in-clinic sessions. These exercises help patients maintain progress between appointments.

What are the most common types of physiotherapy?

Most of our patients require one of the following types of Physiotherapy treatment

  • Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy. The most common type, deals with the musculoskeletal system, encompassing bones, muscles, and joints. This can be particularly helpful both before and after surgery, such as knee or hip replacement.
  • Neurological Physiotherapy following a stroke, multiple sclerosis or Parkinsons disease.
  • Cardiothoracic or Cardiovascular Physiotherapy following a diagnosis of chronic heart disease, or rehabilitation after a heart attack.
  • Respiratory Physiotherapy helping patients suffering with asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cystic fibrosis.
Is physio better than a chiropractor?

That’s a difficult one to answer and depends very much on your symptoms, medical diagnosis and what treatment plan is recommended. In general terms, Physiotherapy provides a greater variety of options for patients with pain or disability that limits their body’s movement, whereas Chiropractic treatment involves readjusting the spine in order to fix various issues in the body.

Can a physio tell if you have a trapped nerve?

Your physiotherapist can carry out a full examination and perform special neurological tests to determine if a trapped nerve is causing your problem or if it is related to something else. Scans may assist with diagnosis though they are not always necessary.

When should you see a physiotherapist for back pain?

If you develop a sudden pain or find your movement is painful or restricted, it may well be worth arranging to see a Physiotherapist as soon as possible so they can determine what the issue is and recommend an appropriate treatment plan, which may include going to see your GP to get medication to help in the process as well. Often just a few sessions can make a real difference causing any pain to subside and ensuring movement is more comfortable.
